Horse
Hero's
Our horses provide a priceless and difficult service; consequently, we are fully and deeply committed to providing them with the optimum of care and treating them with dignity and respect in all phases of their lives. Sadly, no matter how great the care - nor how willing the horse - it is inevitable that
each horse will eventually participate in their
final service as a CTRC mounted therapy horse.
When our horses are no longer able to serve in a
therapeutic capacity, CTRC goes to great lengths to
be sure that we follow through with our Commitment
to the Horse. Non-serving therapy horses fall into
two categories based on their needs and
capabilities:
| Retired |
A Retired therapy horse refers to a horse that has served in the program but is no longer able to perform safely or comfortably as a therapy horse due to the following criteria but not limited to: age, physical limitations, and specialized care. Retired is reserved for a horse that is deemed “unadoptable” and is part of CTRC’s Retired Horse Sanctuary (RHS). |
| Inactive |
An Inactive therapy horse refers to a horse that has worked in the program but is no longer deemed appropriate for therapeutic riding due to the following criteria but not limited to: behavior, temperament or other related constraints. Inactive is reserved for a horse that is deemed “adoptable” - having the potential to perform/function in other capacities after CTRC. |
On average, it costs $2,500 per therapy horse to provide grain, supplements, hay, shoeing, shavings, veterinary services and medications, and other necessary care and supplies for one year. Retired therapy horses incur additional expenses due to their advanced age and special needs care which can be rigorous.
CTRC has three ways in which supporters can team up with a therapy horse.

ADOPTION
Adoption allows an individual or family to assume ownership and welcome a former therapy horse into their lives. CTRC diligently reviews, evaluates and selects the best fit adoptive home for each adoptable therapy horse. We will work with you directly to choose a horse that fits your lifestyle, facility and horse need.
Potential “Adopters” must submit an Adoption Application and must be willing to, if applicable, participate in an interview and facility visit in conjunction with CTRC’s Barn Manager and Program Director. Thorough information on the standards of care and those to be providing that care (i.e Veterinarian, Farrier…) will also need to be provided. If the paring of “Adopter” and horse selected is determined to be a good match the “Adopter” will be asked to complete an Adoption Contract. Once the formalities are completed, the ownership and full responsibilities of the horse and its care will be transferred to the adopting individual or family.
FOSTER
Foster allows a Retired therapy horse to live and be cared for at a carefully selected foster environment but remain in the ownership of CTRC. All expenses incurred for the care of the horse are the responsibility of the “Fosterer”; however, providing the care and the fostering of the horse is a $2,500 annual tax deductible donation. We will work directly with you to choose a horse that is best suited to the level of care you can provide and the facilities available for fostering.
